The blanket design was inspired by the 2,000-year-old weaving history of the Zapotec Indians of Oaxaca, Mexico. When Spanish conquistadores arrived in the early 16th century, the Zapotecs had already established a tradition of weaving colorful cotton cloth. The Spanish introduced sheep, the spinning wheel and the shuttle loom. Soon the Zapotecs were weaving beautiful designs in wool, using natural dyes from plants and animals. This pattern captures the classic geometric designs and elegant simplicity inherent in Zapotec weaving. The rich, dark red color reflects the beauty of the original, ancient dyes made from chochineal, an insect that feeds on cacti.
